Plato and Sathya Sai: Ideal Education and Human Values in parallel

Education is the foundation of society. Therefore, if our aim is to secure healthy and happy societies we must necessarily turn to education, for it is an ineluctable fact that the students of today will be the leaders of tomorrow. In all times and places great philosophers have spoken about the crucial matter of education and have transmitted their valuable teachings to the generations that followed. One great philosopher, who shines in the firmament of ancient Greek philosophy, is Plato, insolubly bound to his beloved teacher Socrates.

Socrates did not leave any written record of his teachings, which were conveyed to us, instead, through Plato’s writings, uniquely conceived in the form of dialogues where Socrates stands out as the teacher, while no mention is made to himself. This shows how humbly devoted Plato was, and at the same time points to an essential aspect of education: respect and love for one’s teacher. However, the deserving teacher earns this love, and not only through the wisdom he imparts, but because of his personal example. Similarly, the most important qualification of a teacher according to the Sathya Sai Educare program is to represent an inspiring example for the students.

Socrates was such a teacher, who sacrificed his own life so as to stay true to his word, and to his love for Truth, Goodness and Beauty.
