Like every year, a summer camp followed the termination of the 2015-16 Human Values children’s classes, in the facilities of Sai Prema in Markopoulo, near Athens. The central theme of the camp was Mahatma Gandhi’s famous phrase, “Be the change you want to see in the world”. Young and old alike, had the opportunity to draw inspiration from Gandhi’s life and example, but also to enjoy the sun, the sea, the various games, the songs and, last but not least, the sumptuous meals!

The camp started on Saturday, 25th June, with the traditional burning of the May Day wreaths. There was much excitement when everyone jumped over the bonfire, again and again, after the custom of St. John Klidonas. The days which followed focused on various aspects of Gandhi’s life, which showed the way to Truth and Right Conduct, by observing the principle of Nonviolence at all costs.

On Saturday, 2nd July, parents and friends gathered to take part in the camp’s last day activities. The highlight of the evening was the four skits presented by the children, which pinpointed Gandhi’s sterling character and how it was shaped. The children had worked hard and diligently for this presentation, with the help of their teachers, and the result was truly impressive! No wonder the applause they received was loud and hearty. The camp ended on Sunday, 3rd July, with everyone looking forward to the beginning of another year of Human Values classes, in September.
 
Twenty-one children participated in the camp, aged between 7 and 17 years old. Although the age gap was quite big, the children worked effectively and harmoniously together, due to a well balanced daily programme. The day started with prayers, silent seating and yoga practice, followed by the Human Values classes and activities. Sea baths were in the order of every day. In the evening, the day’s activities were discussed and analyzed. Singing and prayer concluded the day. An exciting addition to the programme was the afternoon visit to the nearby Vravrona stables, where everyone had the opportunity to come close to and ride the beautiful horses.
